Many people ask “Should I Shop Online for Christmas?”.  In this article, we will look at the advantages, and disadvantages, of shopping online for the holiday season and how you can combine retail stores with Online Stores to get the best deals on the best products.

It is time to discuss shopping retail versus shopping online.  And, since we are on the subject of time, let’s discuss watches and my friend Brad.

Since I do retail for a living, Brad wanted my perspective on some items that he was going to buy this Christmas.  He wanted to know whether he should shop online or go to the stores and look for Christmas sales.

I asked him what he wanted to buy and he mentioned that he wanted a good watch.  He was still using the same old watch that he had worn for the last 15 years.  After many years of getting gifts for other people, he said that the one thing that he would like to buy for himself was a good watch.

“Should I shop online?” he asked.  “And,” he added, “if I shop online, how will I get the feel for whether I really like the watch?”

Brad had just asked the most common online Shopping question.

If we shop online, without physically holding the merchandise and trying it on, how will we know if we truly like the item?

I told Brad to physically visit the store, try on watches of all varieties, note the prices, and return to tell me of his findings.  He did just that and came to my house directly afterward.

He found a Tag Heuer watch in the mall at a boutique watch store and said to me: “I absolutely have to have this particular watch.  It looked great.  I love it!”  I had rarely seen Brad so excited about a gift.

He mentioned that the watch was rather price-prohibitive at more than $1500 while his wife did not want him to go over $1000.

Thus, we set a goal of finding the exact same watch at a much better price.  We found a site called the Watch Store Online offering the very same watch for just under $1000, a savings of more than $800, or about half the price of the boutique store.

Feeling guilty, Brad called the boutique store to find out if they could come close to the online price.  They said that they could take $200 off but could not meet the online price so Brad bought the watch online.

In this instance, Brad combined retail and online shopping to get the perfect gift at a great price.

Often though, you do not need to visit the retail store to find out more. There are many items that receive stellar reviews, and are so well-known, that you know you are getting the best quality.  For example, if you are looking for the Best Toys for Christmas 2009, you usually do not need to visit the retail stores.  Toys receive hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of independent reviews and so you can know the product without seeing it.

People usually ask “Should I shop online for Christmas?” because they are unsure whether the online experience can match the retail experience.  As you can see, the two can be combined to obtain the best gifts at the best price.

There is an option that many people don’t think of when wanting to Save Money. Most people forget about the debt consolidation option. When done in the right way this can be a godsend.

You are already probably paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a home in California or more. So you certainly do not want to spend unnecessary additional money on closing costs, lender fees, higher interest rates, and other hidden costs. Ways to save on your home mortgage are not immediately obvious, especially when you are not familiar with all the ways lenders can tack on additional costs to the total amount of the mortgage. Use these tips for ways to save money on your home mortgage.

Make sure you are choosing the right type of home mortgage for your situation. When it comes to the total cost over the duration of the loan, the 30 year fixed rate home mortgage is the most expensive, with one exception. If you plan to live in your home for the length of the loan, it is the best home mortgage. As you shop for mortgages, take into account how long you plan to be in your home. Let that length of time determine the type of loan you get. As a general rule of thumb for shorter periods of time, choose an adjustable rate loan, and for longer ones choose a fixed rate.

Try to negotiate with your lender. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking your lender for a better interest rate or to eliminate some of the fees associated with your home loan. Consider the fees for which the lender makes no money: appraisal, inspection fees, processing fee, title fees, private mortgage insurance, and credit report fees. Anything outside of these fees is fair game to be negotiated with the lender. Do not hesitate to ask your lender to take away some of the unnecessary fees.

Make payments more frequently. If you get paid on a biweekly basis, consider making biweekly home mortgage payments. Each time you make an extra payment, even if it is just one, it shortens the life of your loan. By making two payments a month instead of one, it takes you a little over 23 years to repay a 30 year fixed rate mortgage. Any extra payments you make toward your home mortgage go toward the principal of the loan. So, the balance of the principal, rather than the interest, is reduced by any extra money you pay. When you do this, you can reduce your home mortgage payment dramatically as stated above. Before you make extra payments, make sure your agreement did not include a charge for early repayment.

Try to avoid paying private mortgage insurance. You are required to pay PMI when you make a down payment less than 20 percent of the amount of the loan. The amount you pay in PMI could be used to make extra home mortgage payments or invested in a high yield investment account. If you are already paying PMI, watch your equity closely and drop the insurance once you have 20 percent equity in your home.

There is no sense in paying extra money in interest and other home mortgage costs unless you absolutely must. By using just one or two of these methods you can save thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars in the total cost of your mortgage. When you take steps to reduce your costs, make sure you are not decreasing one cost and increasing another simultaneously.

I was wondering if i got a honduran bank account and i put some money in a honduran bank account would i be able to save money if i get money out of the honduran bank account rather than getting money out of an atm. Also note that i am planning on being in honduras for months.

As I have already mentioned in response to your other questions, you can open a Lempira account quite easily which will pay you a little interest and you will not have to pay ATM fees. As far as the two percent of the exchange rate, remember banks are in business to make money. If I put dollars in my Honduran Lemp account I get the standard exchange rate of 18.895 per dollar. If I need to buy dollars from that same Lemp account I get a lesser exchange rate plus pay a fee for the exchange. Still better than exchanging money with business’s or with the street money exchangers.
