Be professional at first, but then you could try to make small talk to break the ice. Ask if it’s warm/cold/stormy/sunny where they are…if they are having a good day…etc. You can add (in very small doses) that your kids/dog/neighbors are enjoying the weather where you are and ask the same, but don’t take it past more than a few seconds.
If they are mad/upset/annoyed….try to give them that feel that you’re ‘in their corner’ because of the problem. Let them know you’re not going to just dump them off if it gets too hard. Customers want to be coddled and feel assured that they are being listened to and will respond to this type of treatment in a positive way…most of the time. There are, however, some customers that are flat-out "problem children" and just want to spread the grief around just because that’s how they are. Work through those types with more professionalism and more distance. If you’re a customer rep, you know of the people I’m talking about!
