Originally telecast … Originally telecast on December 18, 1960 [for State Farm Insurance], and a distillation of many of Jack’s “Christmas Shopping” radio episodes (this one uses the “1948 finish”, where Mel…well, you KNOW which one!). Benny wanted at least one version on film.
these 22 some odd … these 22 some odd minutes are oscar material for sitcom. they don’t give oscars for t.v., so an emmy then. every character was perfectly suited. besides mel blanc, my next to favorite was the guy selling lingerie talking about ”the loops”.
jack’s secret was that he was always the straight man. everyone else was crazy except him.
and that look of bewilderment when he would look at the audience over his shoulder. priceless.
Jack Benny: Lets … Jack Benny: Lets see What Did I get you last year?
Rochester: A brand new Dollar Bill.
Benny: Oh Yeah
Rochester: and a Lecture on the Evils of Wine , Women and Song.
Benny: That was just a Gag, you know I just , I just did that to make you laugh.
Rochester:I wish you had told me I cried all night.
Benny: Oh Stop.
That’s true..the … That’s true..the same was true with Lucille Ball she made sure to treat the Regular cast and her guest cast with the utmost respect…..Jack Benny and Lucille Ball were two of the best in the business. I enjoyed watching both of them.
Jack Benny had the … Jack Benny had the good sense and self confidence to make sure everyone else in the cast got the best lines. That way you never tired of Jack himself. Look how quickly TV audiences tired of Milton Berle, who had to dominate every second of air time. I can’t imagine ever tiring of these wonderful clips.
One of the funniest … One of the funniest TV programmes that I have ever seen. I have lost count how many times that I have seen it it still cracks me up.How Mel and Jack ever got through it I’ll never know, but I’m glad they did
Frank Nelson is … Frank Nelson is great. One of the Best Comedy guys in the business.. he is a true legend. He worked so Well with Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Red Foxx and many others.
I’d heard this … I’d heard this script in the radio version several times before and variations of it were done repeatedly but this is the definitive version…timeless comedy. Mel gives his finest performance ever (IMO), as Jack’s breakup up attests. I’ve heard many of the Benny radio shows from ‘32 to ‘55 and this is and will always be my favorite sketch.
he’s so natural as … he’s so natural as this character, I am thinking that this IS just Frank Nelson… it’s not an act !! lots of great memories here… I wasn’t born when these ran originally, but they showed them on re-runs here when I was a kid… I LOVED it when Mel was on because he was the cartoon guy !! turns out he was THE cartoon guy…. of cartoon guys !
It’s fun to hear … It’s fun to hear the different Looney Tunes characters coming thru in Mel Blanc’s performance. Before watching the Jack Benny shows on YouTube I had never seen Mel perform in person. Hilarious when Jack is cracking up at his performance after chasing down the truck.
