he’s so natural as this character, I am thinking that this IS just Frank Nelson… it’s not an act !! lots of great memories here… I wasn’t born when these ran originally, but they showed them on re-runs here when I was a kid… I LOVED it when Mel was on because he was the cartoon guy !! turns out he was THE cartoon guy…. of cartoon guys !

It’s fun to hear …
It’s fun to hear the different Looney Tunes characters coming thru in Mel Blanc’s performance. Before watching the Jack Benny shows on YouTube I had never seen Mel perform in person. Hilarious when Jack is cracking up at his performance after chasing down the truck.

Evidently at 22:40 Mel’s sobbing gets to Mr. Benny. To see a master comedian like Jack stifling a breaking up is priceless.

I’d heard this …
I’d heard this script in the radio version several times before and variations of it were done repeatedly but this is the definitive version…timeless comedy. Mel gives his finest performance ever (IMO), as Jack’s breakup up attests. I’ve heard many of the Benny radio shows from ’32 to ’55 and this is and will always be my favorite sketch.
